the Choosing Wisely project, and five tests or procedures You May Not Need

April 5, 2012

Today, a group of nine medical specialty boards released a new report saying that a large number of medical tests and procedures billed as routine are largely unnecessary.   They recommended that doctors perform 45 common tests and procedures less often, and they are also urging patients to question these services if they are offered.  Eight additional specialty boards are preparing lists to be added to these.

A while back, the ABIM Foundation and Consumer Reports created the Choosing Wisely project.  According to the Choosing Wisely website, “National organizations representing medical specialists, as well as Consumer Reports are working with the ABIM Foundation to help physicians, patients and other health care stakeholders think and talk about overuse of health care resources in the United States.”
