Three out of 20 scopes used to examine GI tracts and colons improperly cleaned

Before your next endoscopic procedure, you want to read this – or maybe not!  APIC’s (the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology) mission is to create a safer world through prevention of infection.  At their just concluded annual conference, researchers presented the results of a study showing that three out of 20 scopes used to examine GI tracts and colons are improperly cleaned between uses.  Annually, there are between 15 and 20 million endoscopy procedures conducted with these reusable devices.
